A newly renovated 4-storey house had a dark and dingy garden. The brief was to make an elegant, simple modern space for entertaining and for children to play.
As the garden was entered through modern glass fronted extensions to both the basement and first floor levels the treatment of the steps was crucial. A chunk of soil was removed to ease the transition from basement to ground and made wide easy steps possible. Classic sawn York stone was used throughout and low raised beds were built around the perimeter doubling as neat planters and seating.
Planting was kept simple and deliberately low maintenance with an emphasis on climbing plants which will gradually clothe the walls and add colour and scent. Lighting was incorporated in the steps and angled to highlight key trees and plants.
