This garden in Oxfordshire is in the site of an old sand quarry. It had an unusually steep slope that needed completely re-designing to create a more useable space.
To link the modern 1970’s built house with the surrounding countryside a mixture of modern and traditional materials were used; crisp cut stone and smooth Venetian plaster walls were wrapped around terraces of dry stone walling, tensioned stainless steel wires were taken through timber posts to form light and airy balustrading. Upper terraces were laid to lawn for soft play areas, lower levels were designed for family eating and entertaining.
Predominately Mediterranean plants were selected to suit the dry sandy soil with a strong emphasis on movement and texture.
